Safety Rules for Razor Scooters
by Viola Frymann, D.O., F.A.A.O., F.C.A.
The request most frequently made to Santa Claus in the year 2000 was for a razor scooter.

The concept of a scooter is not new for I had one when I was a child. But at that time it was heavier, made of wood, and substantially built. The metal variety on sale today is light in weight, more delicate in design, and encourages hazardous tricks. Several designs have been recalled by manufacturers in recent weeks on account of significant injuries due to breakage of the scooter under stress of use.

In discussing sports injuries with an orthopedist he told me that the greatest number of severe injuries coming to the emergency room at this present time do not come from football or baseball or even skateboards, but from the modern razor scooters.

Three important safety rules to follow:
  1. While it is not legally mandated to wear a helmet, parents should make a rule: "no scooter without a helmet" at all times."
  2. Keep the scooters out of roads with vehicular traffic.
  3. Teach through caution and safety when challenged to perform dangerous tricks.
Have a safe and healthy holiday.
